The General Accounting Office (GAO), the research arm of the U.S. Congress, found there is no widespread abuse of Ritalin in schools. The GAO's September 2001 report on ADHD concludes — as 48 Hours must have known because it is public record — that abuse of Ritalin is neither widespread nor considered a concern by the vast majority of school principals in this country. 

But the reporter for the segment cited — without qualification, let alone mention of the GAO findings — the belief among unnamed "authorities" that Ritalin is a "middle school cocaine."
