The General Accounting Office (GAO), the research arm of the U.S. Congress, found there is no widespread abuse of Ritalin in schools. The GAOs September 2001 report on ADHD concludes – as 48 Hours must have known because it is public record – that abuse of Ritalin is neither widespread nor considered a concern by the vast majority of school principals in this country.
But the reporter for the segment cited – without qualification, let alone mention of the GAO findings – the belief among unnamed "authorities" that Ritalin is a "middle school cocaine."
